Meet Bob Buckhorn

When Bob Buckhorn drove into Tampa in the early 1980s with a 1966 Dodge Dart, one suitcase and $300, he didn’t have a job waiting for him. What he had was belief. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Bob wasn’t chasing a title — he was chasing possibility. He landed on a friend’s couch and began building a life the way so many newcomers do: by working hard, listening carefully, and learning the community one neighborhood at a time.

Tampa looked very different back then. It wasn’t the booming skyline it is today. It was quieter, a little rough around the edges, and still discovering its identity. But where others saw a city that hadn’t yet arrived, Bob saw potential. He believed Tampa could become one of America’s great cities — and he wanted to help make that happen. Public service wasn’t part of some grand plan; it grew naturally from his desire to give back to the community that had given him opportunity.

I’m running for Mayor because
I believe in a Tampa for ALL of us.

Tampa didn’t just give Bob a career. It gave him his purpose and his family. He met his wife, Cathy, here, and together they raised their daughters, Grace and Colleen, in the very neighborhoods he worked to strengthen. The parks he fought to improve weren’t abstract policy goals — they’re where children like his own daughters played. The streets he pushed to modernize are the same ones his family traveled every day. His commitment to Tampa has always been deeply personal because this city is home.

After serving on City Council, Bob was elected the 58th Mayor of Tampa, serving from 2011 to 2019. He took office during one of the most difficult economic periods in recent history, as the city was still recovering from the Great Recession and facing a significant budget shortfall. His focus was steady, disciplined leadership. Year after year, the city balanced its budget, strengthened its financial standing, and positioned itself for long-term growth. But for Bob, the goal was never simply balancing numbers — it was restoring confidence and creating opportunity for families.

During his time as mayor, Tampa experienced remarkable momentum. The completion and expansion of the Tampa Riverwalk transformed a fragmented waterfront into a vibrant public space that brings residents and visitors together. The redevelopment of Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park turned underutilized land into one of the city’s most beloved gathering places for families and community events. His administration focused not only on downtown, but on neighborhoods across the city — improving walkability, expanding access to parks, modernizing infrastructure, and investing in safer, higher-quality affordable housing. When other cities were closing fire stations, cutting pensions and defunding police and fire budgets, Bob never swayed from his commitment to the men and women who protect us and crime plummeted as a result.

Tampa’s history is rich, but its future
is limitless. We stand at the beginning
of our city’s next great chapter.

Bob also prioritized families and inclusion. He expanded youth programs that kept community centers open longer and gave thousands of children safe, structured places to spend time after school. His administration launched Autism Friendly Tampa, helping first responders and city staff better serve residents on the autism spectrum. He supported policies that made Tampa more welcoming and inclusive, reinforcing the belief that a great city is one where everyone feels they belong.

Today, Tampa is one of America’s most dynamic and desirable cities. But growth has brought new challenges. Housing affordability, transportation, and the rising cost of living are real pressures facing working families. Bob believes the next chapter of Tampa’s story requires experienced, steady leadership focused on fundamentals — safe neighborhoods, reliable infrastructure, responsive city services, and practical solutions that keep opportunity within reach.

For Bob Buckhorn, growth is not the ultimate measure of success. The true test is whether that growth improves everyday life for the people who call Tampa home. The young man who once arrived with little more than suitcases and belief found his future here. After decades of service, he remains committed to ensuring Tampa’s success extends to every neighborhood and every family — because this city isn’t just where he built a career. It’s home.
